The Elvenbane series

Elvenbane: The Prophecy is about to be fulfilled. There will come a child. One born of human mother but fathered by the demons, possessed of magic more powerful that the elven lords! The Child shall be hunted before its birth, yet shall escape the hunt and will rise up against the masters and cast them into the lowest hell… The world is run by elvenlords. Powerful, proud and secure in their dominion keep legions of human slaves for work and take their pleasure in elven or human concubines. The breeding of halfbreeds is strickly forbidden. Then Serina Daeth – the favoured human concubine of the elven overlord Dryan – finds herself pregnant. Forced to flee into the desert, Serina dreams – as she dies – of a midwife delivering her baby, Shana; the midwife is in fact the shapechanging dragon – shaman Alara. But Shana is no ordinary child: raised by the dragons, she is destined to become the Elvenbane.

Elvenblood: The powerful magic of ruthless Elvenlord masters has for centuries ruled the world. Even Shana, the legendary Elvenbane prophesied to deliver the oppressed into freedom, is helpless before such power. She and her ragtag band of outcasts, half-blood wizards, escaped human slaves, and free-thinking dragons have gained only a token victory against the mighty lords. Only the long-forgotten Iron People, a band of human nomads, have escaped the tyranny of the reigning wizards. How have they survived through the centuries? As the winds of change sweep the world, and as tensions seething beneath the surface of Elven society threaten to break into open revolt, Shana meets the ancient tribe. Could an age-old secret free Shana and her people…or will its discovery call down their doom?

Elvenborn: For generations, Elvenlords have ruled the world, holding sway over humans and half-bloods alike. But the peace was shattered when the Elvenbane emerged to lead a rebellion against them. And now the Elvenlords’ own children, grown old enough to want their own power, have begun their own revolt, and are seizing the houses of noble Elvenlords. The Elvenlords need a new military leader, and they find one in Krytian, a quiet, un-ambitious Elvenlord who has studied the art of war since his father disappeared years ago while searching for the Great Portal through which the Elvenborn came to this world. Kyrtian proves to be the Elvenlords’ best military mind. But as he fights the young lords, his scheming cousins Aelmarkin and Triana are hatching a plot to take over his estates. And his greatest supporter, Lord Kyndreth, is as wily a politician as any among the elite. Kyrtian can defeat any foe on the field of battle…but can he survive his “allies”?

A Kink of Oak and a Queen of Yew sit on the thrones of the land – the King a drunken lout, the Queen a magical schemer. Ash and Rowan are nearly dead, their totem trees in the sacred square withering away to nothing.
All is falling into place for the power hungry Queen Ysa, who will stop at nothing to ensure the continuation of her line. Her Expertise in the dark arts all but guarantees her success, and the wooden rings of royalty have transferred themselves to her hands of their own accord. Nothing and no one escapes her notice or her wrath. Only one thing may stand in her way: a long-ago prophecy that a Daughter of Ash will one day rise again to reclaim her rightful place on the throne. Queen Ysa’s shrewd machinations have seen to it that none of the House of Ash remains alive. But deep in the swamps, in the care of the witch-healer all need and fear, there is a young girl who cannot be the witch’s daughter; a girl who by virtue of her beauty, elegance, and simmering power can only be a Daughter of Ash, the one who will rise to fulfill the prophecy - and the destiny of her birthright.

Knight or Knave: The Book of the Yew (with Sasha Miller) Times are changing in Rendelsham. The old King is dead, and the foolish Prince Florian has assumed the throne. Florian's mother, Queen Ysa of the House of Oak, still controls the land from behind the scenes, but her job grows more difficult every day. Her unworthy, headstrong son is harder to control than her husband was, and she must spend more time than ever masking her own movements. The barbarian Sea-Rover clan presents problems from the edge of the Bog, Ysa's newest magical ally has been exposed as a traitor, and still the unknown yet encroaching threat from the North continues to grow. Ashen, heir to the nearly dead House of Ash and illegitimate half-sister of the boy king, is the only force for good in the kingdom. To keep her further from the throne, Ysa has arranged for her to be married and far from Rendelsham—and Ashen, eager to be away from the predatory politics of the palace, is happy to go. But duty overwhelms personal desire in matters of the court, and soon she must return to Rendelsham for the good of the kingdom. Through births and deaths, marriages and duels, love and betrayal, magic and force, the four Houses of Rendelsham can only survive by the strength of their unity—but is unity possible in such a court of intrigue as this one?

A Crown Disowned: The Book of the Ash and the Rowan (with Sasha Miller)The Earth is shaking and splitting as the forces from the North draw nearer. The Ice Dragon Riders are speaking to the land, and more fire mountains awaken in the Bog. Rohan seeks to join forces with Tusser, leader of the Bog-folk, as Queen Ysa raises an army to clear the Bog. War draws closer until even the Queen cannot deny it any longer. Raids from the North increase and for the first time, the Riders of the Ice Dragons appear. It is time for the Queen to give up her game of pitting one faction against another. Four great armies assemble and they all march under the same banner. Though they do not and cannot represent the Four Trees, this is nevertheless seen as a good omen. Many good men from all four armies fall in battle, yet the Great Foulness is still at large. Is the combined might of the four powers enough to free the land from evil?

Dragon Blade: The Book of the Rowan (with Sasha Miller) Over a year has passed since the defeat of the Great Foulness, and the ravaged earth has begun to heal. Lost for generations, the signet rings of the Four Great Houses—Oak, Yew, Ash, and Rowan—have been restored to their rightful heirs. And Ashen NordornQueen, mistress of the Land of Ever Snow, looks forward to a life of peace and happiness with her beloved husband and their newborn son—only to learn that an ancient evil still threatens all that she holds dear. The Mother Ice Dragon, the fearsome progenitor of her deadly breed, has awakened from slumber to menace the world anew. Legend holds that only the Dragon Blade, forged from the scales of her vanquished mate, can slay the deadly female dragon, but the Dragon Blade has been lost for ages. As Ashen embarks on a perilous quest to find the mystic sword, she leaves her castle and homeland in the care of her closest friends, including Rannore, Lady of the Rowan, who soon faces danger of a different sort....

Knight of the Red Beard (with Sasha Miller) Having rebuilt the NordornLand from rubble, Ashen and Gaurin rule justly and fairly over a reinvigorated land. Beloved by their kingdom, they now turn their attention to the next generation of Nordorn royalty. Responsible Bjaudin, heir to the throne, focuses on his studies and Hegrin, Queen of Rendel, rears her own growing brood. But the youngest siblings, Elin and Mikkel, seem destined to alter the future of the NordornLand—for better or for worse. Thirteen-year-old Elin craves power, and believes her new alliance with the evil Ysa may help her achieve it. Eleven-year-old Mikkel stows away on a Sea-Rover ship, hoping for a brief adventure. But when the ship is attacked, Mikkel is taken prisoner, and soon his bonds to the NordornLand are the last thing on his mind. Through births and deaths, celebration and wars, Ashen and Gaurin have worked tirelessly to bring peace and prosperity to their kingdom. But it appears that this era of peace may be at its end. This final installment of the Cycle of Oak, Yew, Ash, and Rowan brings the series to a thrilling climax worthy of these fascinating characters.

Trillium series

Black Trillium Ruwenda is a pleasant, peaceful land -- but the magic of its guardian, the Archimage Binah, is waning. Binah must pass along her protector-ship to the triplet princess of Ruwenda. She bestows upon the infant girls the power of the rare and mystical Black Trillium-badge of the royal house, symbol of an ancient magic. While the sisters blossom into beautiful young women, neighboring Labornok use a dark magician to sunder Binah's protection. As invaders pour into Ruwenda, the Archimage orders the princesses to flee-and changes them to search for three magical talismans which when brought together will be their only chance to regain their kingdom and free its people. Each must accomplish her task separately-and to succeed - each must also confront and conquer the limits of her own soul.

Blood Trillium (by Julian May) Twelve years after the princess Haramis, Kadiya, and Anigel wielded the three-part Scepter of Power to vanquish the sorcerer Orogastus, the Archimage Haramis is visited by a fugitive who brings dire news. A sorcerer has escaped from the Klimilon, remote Land of Fire and Ice, to established himself through force of magic as Portolanus, Master of Tuuzamen. Haramis's talisman cannot--or will not--tell her whether Portolanus is the long-banished Orogastus, but it brings ominous intelligence: The sorcerer has brought from his exile a magical object that can unbound the three talismans of the Scepter, transferring their powers from the sisters to Portolanus himself. Even more fearsome, Haramis's talisman reveals a grave threat to the unity of the sisters and the future of Ruwenda . . .for the sacred Black Trillium contained within the amulet worn by each sister has changed, its petals stained the color of blood.

Golden Trillium One of the famed triplet princesses who defeated the evil sorcerer Oragustus, Kadiya ventures forth into the choked swamplands of Ruwenda to seek her own destiny among the Oddlings she once led in battle. Armed with her mystical three-eyed sword, she reaches the lost city of the Vanished Ones and discovers a strange race of dream-catchers called Hassitti whose vision brings chilling warning of a lethal plaque that sows the land with death. Now Kadiya, with only three companions to aid her, journeys into the Thorney Hell, realm of the cannibalistic saurian Skritek, to stop the carrier of the evil disease. Here they discover a portal leading to a universe of awesome darkness – an entranceway to a horror that threatens the very existence of the world of the Three Moons.

Lady of the Trillium (by Marion Zimmer Bradley) When the aging princess Haramis, Archmage of Ruwenda and protector of its lands, senses her impending death, she settles upon young Princess Mikayla as her successor-heedless of the fact that her plans ignore Mikayla's own desires. Set against the background created in Black Trillium (co-authored with Julian May and Andre Norton, LJ 8/90), Bradley's latest novel focuses not on the cliched battle between good and evil but rather on the more subtle war of the misunderstanding and intolerance found between old and young. Poignant in its depiction of old age, this is a strong addition to most libraries. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist Bradley writes the latest sequel to Black Trillium (1990), the fantasy she created with Julian May and Andre Norton that has generated several successful progeny, all by her lonesome. Her tale concerns the triplet princesses of Ruwenda and their fight to save their homeland. Some time back, Princess Haramis became, on next to no notice, archimage of Ruwenda and had to learn how to handle both her powers and her office as she went along. Now she is aging and must groom a successor. Her determination unleashes a storm of personal and political intrigues, both mundane and magical. With her well-established talents for depicting female characters, political shenanigans, and potent magic, Bradley turns out a thoroughly satisfying yarn that brings to a fine conclusion a project that might have been a disaster in lesser hands.

Sky Trillium (by Julian May) After high fantasy grandes dames Marion Zimmer Bradley, Andre Norton and Julian May collaboratively created a quest saga on the magical World of the Three Moons with Black Trillium (1991), May carried on the series by herself (Blood Trillium, 1993). Now, in order to save that world, the series' three sister-heroines must battle the power-hungry Star Men in order to forge a mysterious Sceptre of Power from the supernatural talismans that are relics of the Vanished Ones who nearly destroyed the world. One of the sisters, Queen Anigel, pregnant with triplet princes and dismissing herself as the least courageous of the three Petals of the Black Trillium, has lost her talisman. A second, Kadiya, warrior Lady of the Eyes, wields an impotent sword despite her dashing bravado. And the third sister, Haramis, Archimage of the Land, finds the third talisman, The Wand of the Wings, key to unifying the Sceptre, threatened by her unwilling love for Orogastus, leader of the Star Men. May traces her characters' paths through the inevitable bog, battle, ambush and torture chamber.  It opens with evil magic from the ancient "war of enchantment" reasserting itself and unleashing a host of natural disasters. Only the Sky Trillium can defeat this evil, and only the talismans of the three princesses in unison can control the Trillium. Unfortunately, one talisman is missing, another has lost its power, and common court intrigue threatens to sabotage the search for the lost one and the relationship of the three princesses. The princesses remain engrossing characters, and the rest of the story, though leaning more toward standard fantasy than its predecessors, displays May's usual brisk pacing, command of the language, and deftness at world building. Maybe this is not the book with which to start the saga, but it is an admirable continuation of it that will gratify readers already hooked by it.

Witch World - The Turning

Storms of Victory  The Witches of Estcarp defeated Pagin of Karsten when they caused the Turning, a massive cataclysm that moved mountains to block the invasion. But the witches’ enormous use of magic crippled their powers and brought chaos and destruction to all of Witch World. At the Lormt sanctuary, a solitary chronicler is trying to bring people news of those lost or missing since the cataclysm. And to him come two rousing epics of heroism and triumph, one of a young Sulcar woman who awakens to her Power only to do battle with an Ancient Evil; the other a saga of a Dales Lady and the falconers who help her defend her lands from marauding pirates.

Flight of Vengeance  The only way the Witches of Estcarp could save their realm from the invaders was to combine their power in a vast Turning. So they willed a massive earth-movement that toppled mountains. But victory was bitter. Rivers shifted; the shape of the land was changed; hordes of innocent people lost homes, families, heritage…and the Witches’ power were spent in the enormous effort. Here is the saga of the heroic survivors who struggle to resurrect their world from its ruins: a young healer and a lost borderer find new hope and the means to thwart an ancient evil awakened by the cataclysm; while a Lady of the Dales and a Falconer lord fight a common otherworldly enemy. Excitement and adventure fill the pages of this second volume in the culminating epic of Andre Norton's Witch World, one of the most beloved fantasy worlds of all time.

On Wings of Magic Tumultuous changes reverberated throughout Witch World. The witches of Estcarp lay decimated by the massive mountain-moving magic of the Turning. Saving their world from invasion by Pager of Karsten wreaked a havoc all its own, and the face of the world has been racked by catastrophe. Now is a time of chaos; former enemies are thrust together; ordinary people must become heroes. A simple scribe holds the key to her village’s survival; the parents of a kidnapped girl challenge the mighty Hounds of Alizon, Karsten’s ally. Their fight against all odds to defeat the malicious magic of the Hounds is their only chance to win their way to freedom. This is the stuff of high adventure; memorable, enchanting.

Secrets of the Witch World series

The Key of the Keplain For time beyond memory, the fire-eyed Keplian horses have lured riders to their death, sating the blood lust of the Dark Tower. All Witch World knows that the hunted, hated beasts serve Evil--all except one young woman. Fleeing her home after her beloved grandfather dies, the orphaned Navajo-Comanche girl Eleeri follows an ancient and magical trail to Witch World. When she discovers the Keplian mare Tharna and her newborn colt in the hands of men eager to destroy them, Eleeri fights for their freedom. Running for their lives, psychic Eleeri and telepathic Tharna bond. And in a hidden canyon, they discover the awesome truth: The Keplians were created to serve Light, and to ride with humans.

The Magestone  They were sworn enemies compelled to join forces against a greater foe... Mereth, a 75 year old woman from the Dales, has traveled to the famed archives at Lormt in search of her heritage. She was hoping to learn both her father's identity and the origin of an unusual jewel her mother had once given her as a betrothal gift - an ancient magestone that was stolen long ago. Kasarian, a nobleman of Alizon, had come to Lormt unintentionally - through a glowing portal he'd found in the lowest levels of his castle.
The two had no reason to trust one another. Magic was a way of life in the Dales while the Alizonders abhorred it, and the two lands had been at war for a millennium. Yet Mereth and Kasarian discovered they had a great deal in common - and a reason to join forces. For Kassarian was desperate to thwart the schemes of one of his countryman, an ambitious tyrant who was plotted to seize control of Alizon through an alliance with the dark wizards of Escore. And the key to his success was a strange magical device the mages possessed - Mereth's long-lost magestone.

The Warding of Witch World Millions of readers have thrilled as Andre Norton – named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America – created an immense, vibrant tapestry of untamed magic and limitless adventure known as Witch World, a place where mountains dance and sorcerous gates draw good and evil from other universes. Now Andre Norton surpasses herself in the breathtaking scope and brilliance of this, the final novel of the classic series. Estcarp faces apocalypse: in a battle of Powers the great key to the gates has been lost. The portals stand open: and pan-dimensional evil is poised to invade. All of Witch World’s champions must band together and dare unknown dangers in a desperate race to find and close the planet’s uncharted gates. But if they succeed, the Witch World will be shut off from the cosmos – forever.

Anthologies and Collections

Magic in Ithkar (4 vols) is a shared world anthology of fantasy stories edited by Andre Norton and Robert Adams.  The book collects thirteen original short stories by various fantasy authors which share the setting of an annual fair in the city of Ithkar, together with an introduction by Adams and notes on the authors by Norton.

As described in the introduction by co-editor Robert Adams, the world of which Ithkar is a part has suffered from some past holocaust which wiped out an earlier, higher civilization. Subsequently, the area which became Ithkar became a base for the explorations of three godlike visitors, who came to be worshiped as actual deities after their departure. A temple and priesthood dedicated to them developed over succeeding generations, which held a yearly fair on the anniversary of the visitors' first arrival. The city of Ithkar grew up about the temple on the strength of the commerce the fair attracted.

The historical background provided appears science fictional in nature; the war that destroyed the previous culture is related in terms which suggest a nuclear war, complete with radiation-derived mutations of life-forms in the vicinities of the nuclear strikes, while the story of the visitors resembles an expedition of interstellar explorers. Present-day Ithkar is, however, a fantasy setting, in which wizards and sorcerers are rife, and magic works.

Catfantastic (6 vols) Two of the biggest names in the fantasy field have put together a unique collection of fantastical cat tales for friends of furry felines. Cats work a special magic in these stories from the future, from the past, and from dimensions people never dream of.

Tales of the Witch World (3 vols) Almost 25 years after Norton created her much-loved Witch World series, she has invited 16 other writers to use that background. Her own contribution, a typically darkly imagined fragment, is followed by Robert Bloch's droll rewriting of the same story from another character's point of view. The other colorful, clearly told stories include Wilanne Belden's moving account of a strange child's survival in war and wilderness, Charles de Lint's tale of a wondrous white road, Ardath Mayhar's narrative of a young boy coming to terms with his ""witch borne'' powers and Elizabeth Scarborough's fable of a warrior meeting a new challenge: a baby needing a foster mother. This collection is a welcome exception to the tedium of most shared-world anthologies.

Four From the Witch World Four long stories, that is, not people or monsters or things: sort of a companion volume to the various Tales of the Witch World collections (most recently 1988). Again, Norton s role was limited to encouraging the authors to contribute. Thus, Elizabeth H. Boyer explores some problems with an inheritance; C.J. Cherryh writes of a Dale warrior and an Estcarp witch; Meredith Anne Pierce meditates on Gates and ecology; and Judith Tarr's Javanne masquerades as one of the traditionally all-male Falconers.

Moon Mirror A collection of stories from the Grand Mistress of Fantasy which are mostly from the seventies, with an general theme of environmental problems. My favorite was "The Toymaker's Snuffbox", which didn't fit the collection and was written in 1966, quite a bit earlier than the rest. (Goodreads)

Wizard's Worlds collects thirteen novellas, novelettes and short stories by Norton, most of them previously published in her collections High Sorcery (1970) and Lore of the Witch World (1980). The title story was previously published as "Wizards' World". Included are seven stories set in Norton's "Witch World" series ("Falcon Blood", "The Toads of Grimmerdale", "Changeling", "Spider Silk", "Sword of Unbelief", "Sand Sister", and "Were-Wrath".

Andre Norton III

Standalones:

Outside: A young girl determines to find out what is outside the sealed off city in which she's always lived but discovers that the only way she can get out is with the help of a mysterious rhyming man.

Dread Companion: Accepting a post as governess to get away from a world which has little to offer a woman of intelligence, Kilda soon comes to realise that there is something strange about her charges. Like Miles and Flora in "The Turn of the Screw", Bartare and Oomark have an invisible companion who is rather unpleasant, and they start to play mind games with Kilda under the direction of the mysterious "She". When they arrive at their destination, the planet Dylan, things get worse; Kilda follows the children through some kind of gateway into a very different world, woven by Norton from the legends of the land of Faery.

Breed To Come:  When desperate measures failed to control what men had begun and could not stop, they fled their polluted planet, leaving behind an epidemic virus born of experimentation. Yet unlike men, whom the disease could destroy, the animals of the planet thrived. Each generation was more forceful and intelligent than the last. In the ruins of what was once a university complex, a vast band of The People, more highly evolved than those on the outside, sought to master the works of men. And they learned that the demons (as men were called) were not legendary but real. Then one day a spaceship landed...

Here Abide Monsters:  Nick Shaw and Linda Durant pass through a door to another realm, into a world where their nightmares are real and deadly. They band together with an English group, some of whom have been on the planet since before the turn of the century...

Iron Cage:  Jony, a prisoner of an alien race, comes to live with a gentle tribe of intelligent animals and discovers camaraderie and love . . . until a spaceship of humans shatters their peaceful lives. Now it's up to Jony to defend his protectors from his own race.

Day of the Ness:  Nine-year-old Hal traces a frantic S.O.S. to a group of friendly space aliens held captive inside a mountain by the evil Ness who plan to take over the world.

The White Jade Fox:  Saranna had heard rumors about Tiensin, the strange old mansion with its oriental treasures. She had heard it was haunted. Now with her own eyes she had seen it was true. The Macabre circle of small foxes ringing the dancer in the secret garden, the mysterious robed woman with a fox’s face. Had Saranna realy seen them? Or had she dreamed it? Saranna had gone to Tiensin under protest. Her spoiled young niece, Honora, had forced her to become a governess to her stepdaughter, Damaris. Never had Saranna encountered anyone as thoroughly evil as Honora. She was beautiful, and she could pull the wool over any man’s eyes. But she could not deceive Saranna. Or Damaris, whom she was planning to cheat out of a huge inheritance. Even the handsome and trustworthy Gerrad Fowkes seemed to be taken with the deceitful young stepmother. Saranna knew now that the future held great danger for her and Damaris. She needed desperately to talk to someone. But there was no one. Except Gerrad Fowkes. Or was he too enamored of Honora to believe Saranna?

Merlin's Mirror:  brings to new life the legendary King Arthur and the wizard Merlin in the light of modern knowledge of a lost period of history and today’s understanding of science and interplanetary communication. Yet, as in all Norton’s wonder novels, this is a fabulous adventure in fantasy. Here is Merlin, half star-born, gifted with the advice of an alien intelligence, given the task of renewing civilization and starting humanity again up the ladder to the stars. Here is Arthur, unaware of his stellar heritage. And here too, is the Lady of the Lake, akin to Merlin in that she is also a listener to the music of the spheres and obedient to a celestial command post.

No Night Without Stars: Sander was a metalsmith who should have succeeded his father as the new master smith. But everyone thought that he was too young. He sets out to the ruins of the Before people to try to llearn their skills and prove himself. He meets Fanyi who is at the ruins for her own reason. A good clean fantasy for young adults.

Knave of Dreams: Unfortunately for Ramsey Kimble his original body is back on Earth, dead and buried. In the alternate universe that had been troubling his dreams, the body he now inhabits is supposed to be dead, too, but there was a hitch in the plot to murder Kaskar, crown prince of Ulad. Thus Ramsey wakes up on a bier surrounded by flowers, candles, and guards who have been spelled into statues. There is magic afoot in Ramsey's new world, and plots to murder or manipulate the new Kaskar-returned-from-the-dead. He must quickly sort out his friends from his enemies. His ability to dream true in this new universe makes him the wild card in any scheme to seize the throne of Ulad. Ramsey-now-Kaskar has become the Knave of Dreams.

Wraiths of Time:  When she tries to prevent the theft of a mysterious black box containing an Egyptian ankh, Tally Mitford is unexpectedly hurled back in time to the kingdom of Meroe, a nation threatened by magical forces more real and powerful than anything she has ever seen.

Perilous Dreams: Tam-sin knew dreams; she had been able to summon and dismiss them at her own will; they and the people in them had been but toys with which she could play at desire. Until she had dreamed for Lord Starrex and plunged them both into such a venture as she could not control. Somehow she had brought them here, to new identities, new adventure, and doubtless, new dangers. But there was Kas, who had striven to put an end to both in two times, two worlds, and who must also have been wrenched with the into this, though not in her company? She was to find out, and the doing was to bring her into the alien laws and unmapped lands of yet a third world, and eventually a fourth and a fifth . . . For Tamisan, or Tam-sin, or whatever her name in whatever world, dreamed true—and in so doing altered continually the writing of the histories of the stars.

The Opal-Eyed Fan:  Was it a random storm or destiny's mischief that shipwrecked lovely Persis Rooke on Lost Lady Key? Persis couldn't be sure. Rescued by the handsome Captain Crewe Leverett and marooned on the darkly mysterious island with his strange sister and her beau, she was aware only of the oppressive superstitions of the natives who feared a strange curse--the curse of the opal-eyed fan. Somehow she knew she had to learn the unspoken secret of the island and the truth about the fabulous Spanish lady who, years before, had left the infamous Satin-shirt Jack dead and then disappeared forever. But Persis was not aware of the evil that awaited her, nor of the romance that would endanger her until it was too late. . . .

Velvet Shadows:  Tamaris Penfold was hired as a companion to Alain Sauvage's frail but lovely half-sister, Victorine. She would be a "friend" who would try to protect her from another scandalous involvement--like the one back in France. Alain was a generous and thoughtful employer. Victorine a bright and amusing companion. But Tamaris could not help wondering about the significance of the gold and enamel snake Victorine wore around her neck. Nor could she stop thinking about the fact that someone had been going through her belongings and leaving strange objects among them. Then one day Alain was forced to reveal the true story of Victorine's past. A past, Tamaris suspected, that would soon gain on the future and place everyone at Rancho del Sol under a shadow of constant fear..

Yurth Burden: The world of Zacar was wracked with storms and life there was hard. Yet tow races shared it with no love between them. The Raski were the first people, the Yurth the late comers. This is the story of Elossa, the Yurth girl who followed the Call that every Yurth sensitive must follow when the time came. And this is the story of Stans, the Raski, who had to achieve manhood by blood rite against the hated Yurth. This is a novel of a world where ancient injustice had been done and never righted, where brooding evil and age-old vengeance awaited peace-makers-- and of two who brought this terror down upon their own heads.

The seven mysterious stars painted on the door made it even more important - and strange. Once they wrote their names on it, life would be different for them. Each day, as Monnie and Bim visit the mailbox, unusual gifts and notes appear - a broom, a wand, a light - even a voo-don't doll: in all, six magical wonders that plunge them deep into a week of unexplained happenings. Not until the seventh suspenseful day do they know where the powerful spells will lead them. Frightened, but brave, the two children enter a supernatural world to find answers only they can understand. (written with Phyllis Miller)

Snow Shadow: Being able to step back into the past seemed like a wonderful stroke of luck for erica Jansen. Northanger Abbey was like another world. And her introduction to the family there had come from a charming man, Preston Donner. She felt very fortunate indeed. But from the moment she became a guest at the Abbey, she felt like a prisoner. First there were the arguments she couldn't avoid...then the murders she could not ignore...and then the man who stepped out of her own buried past to entwine her in a terror from which she saw no escape.

Psychocrat Series:

Ice Crown:  The planet Clio was the subject of an experiment by the centuries ago Psychocrats, seeded with people conditioned to develop the history they wanted, and carefully sealed since its discovery, to protect its inhabitants from the trauma of realizing that. But there appear to be Forerunner artifacts on the planet, so a carefully secret mission goes to attempt to retrieve them. Roane is dragged along by her uncle, with his son Sandar, because as a family member her uncle can use her with fewer questions. But in the course of scouting about, seeking their object, she is in a building when others arrive, and unable to escape as the men bring in the princess they had kidnapped. An appeal from Princess Ludorica has her helping her escape the kidnappers -- and then helped her escape Uncle Offlas and Sandar, who would have erased her memory and handed her over to her pursuers to hide their mission. This leads to intrigue, adventure, and action, and includes the question of what, exactly, the Ice Crown of the title and the crowns of other kingdoms do to the people of them; the making of a wreath for an imaginary baby from wayside flowers; hiding behind the kennel of savage dire hounds; an abrupt change in Princess Ludorica as she became queen; a man who claims to have suffered hearing problems ever since another man saved him from a rock fall; and a secret passage into the royal city.

Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to kidnap powerful (or potentially powerful) people. That someone might be … the Psychocrats. Or the heirs of the Psychocrats. It’s impossible to tell, as the villains rule through their machines. On the basis of surprisingly little evidence, the prisoners convince themselves the mass kidnapping is only half of the scheme. Using the strategically placed androids, androids conditioned to obey their creators, the villains can control the galaxy.

High Sorcery Warlocks of other worlds - or scientists of times unknown?  Craike, a man hunted in two worlds… Miss Rutheven, whose needles pointed to secret kingdoms… Dagmar, with the fatal fascination of Helen of Troy… Ully, whose music touched the powers before mankind… Tamisan, the sorceress who found herself the victim of her toys… These and others like them, inhabit Andre Norton’s world of HIGH SORCERY, where the primeval desires and fears of man – his loving and loathing – are merged with his dreams of future knowledge and technological power. Those who have enjoyed the alchemy of Norton’s other mind-bending tales should enjoy these!

The Many Worlds of Andre Norton aka The Book of Andre Norton is a best-of which also includes some essays on writing.

Garan the Eternal Ace pilot and discarded world war 3 hero Garin Featherstone, on a routine expedition, gets sucked down below the ice crust of Antarctica into a "land of the lost," of sorts: without the dinosaurs, but there are wise and civilized lizardlike people, furry house elves, and enormous intelligent bees. Those are the good guys. It seems to have been the lizards who called Featherstone down, using arcane means. His mission: to rescue and then mate with Thrala, last daughter of the humanlike Older Ones - they who, long ages past, came as refugees to this planet and kickstarted evolution. Or at least they gave it a helpful push or two towards the weird, down in the crater. Meanwhile on the bad guy side, you've got a bunch of bad descendents of the humanlike Older Ones, who used to call bad people down to mate with them instead of good people. As a result: all bad. They keep huge, slavering ratlike dogs (possibly doglike rats), and experiment with weaponized fungus.

Basically the top bad guy and Garin both want the same girl, and after all the drama pans out in the crater, we flash back to the original planet of the Older Ones where Garan, the same bad guy, and the same girl had roughly the same problem: reincarnation, apparently.

The main tales of Garin/Garan and his time-crossed exploits are backed up with two unrelated stories: "One-Spell Wizard" about a wizard who can't make his spells last more than 24 hours, and "Legacy of Sorn Fen" about a magic ring that turns one-eyed cripples into successful bartenders. But when the local jerk overlord discovers the secret, will bad stuff happen pending some further comeuppance?

Andre Norton II

In the 1960's and 1970's, Andre Norton continued her prolific trend with many standalone novels and, again, mostly series works, including her most famous, the "Witch World" series.

Standalone Novels

The Sioux Spaceman stars Kade Whitehawk as a rebellious junior member of the Terran Space Service, an organization involved in intergalactic trade. The background of this science fiction novel is a little different from the author's usual universe of Free Traders and long-vanished Forerunners. Here, the Terrans are newcomers to the stars where the humanoid Styor lords still rule a decaying galactic empire. Kade despises the Styor for their arrogant belief that all other races are little more than animals or slaves. On his first outbound mission, he tangles with a Styor lord and is bundled back to the Traders' Base on Lodi in disgrace. Kade is surprised to learn that he has been assigned to another mission, this time on the primitive, fur-trading world of Klor, with the warning that if he screws up again, he'll end his career on a labor gang. Unfortunately, the Styor have already established themselves on Klor and have enslaved the aboriginal population of Ikkinni, who very much remind Kade of his Sioux ancestors prior to the Spanish introduction of horses into the New World. When he accidentally learns how to free the Ikkinni from their Styor slave collars, Kade must decide whether to step back into his official role as a trader, or join the slave rebellion. What are the Ikkinni still lacking that made Kade Whitehawk's Sioux ancestors into such formidable warriors? When the junior trader figures out the answer to this question, he and the Ikkinni are off and galloping.

Star Hunter:  On the jungle world of Jumala, a wanted man is in hiding -- a man whose mind has been imprinted with the brain pattern of another. As a deadly game of hide-and-seek begins to unwind, a man who does not know his own powers faces an interstellar safari determined to run him to ground -- dead or alive!

Eye of the Monster:  Rees Naper had never trusted the reptillian Ishkurians, in spite of the fact that many of the Teraan colonists thought they had been wronged. His worst fears were realized when the Terran authorities decided to grant the Ishkurians self-government and withdrew their protective forces from the planet. It turned out that he was right - as soon as the last troops left the "crocs" went on a killing rampage. Cut off from the remaining fortified outposts by miles of jungle and armies of crocs, Rees knew that his only chance for survival was to outwit the cunning reptiles. He had to learn to think like a croc, feel like a croc...and see through the eye of the monster!

The X Factor: Disksan Fentress was a mutant. His Father was a "first-in" scout, when his Father didn't returm after after a trip he was placed in a creche. And when he could no longer bear the shame of being an outsider among his own people, he stole a spaceship and jumped to an uncharted frozen planet. There Diskam met the alien Brothers-in-fur, who led him to the ghostly ruins where long ago a great civilization had ruled. But others were there-- a courageous girl, a wounded alien, and a band of outlaws determined to find the legendary treasure of Xcothal. Disksan was the only one who could stop the outlaws--but first he had to let the Brothers in-fur show him the way.

Operation Time Search: Snooping around a top-secret government installation, photographer Ray Osborne stumbled across an experimental time field. Suddenly the familiar Ohio landscape disappeared and Ray found himself transported to a prehistoric world where the dread priest of Atlantis waged a war against the Sun-born of Mu. So while the scientist of the Twentieth Century worked desperately to draw him back to the present, Ray Osborne was recruited by the people of Mu to win a war that could change the course of history, and trap him in the past forever!

Dark Piper:  Vere Collis, a young man from a military family, narrates in first-person the apocalyptic story of Beltane, a very remote Terran outpost whose human colonists are mainly scientists. As the Terran Confederation gradually disintegrates under the burden of interstellar wars, Beltane becomes more and more isolated--an easy target for mercenary soldiers who still possess the ships to travel between stars. Retired Sector-Captain Griss Lugard attempts to warn the colonists of their imminent danger. When this fails, he leads a group of youngsters (including the narrator, Vere Collis) deep underground before a series of explosions seals them from all contact with the outer world. Vere and his friends must return to the surface, in spite of monsters who have adapted to life underground. That which awaits them among the silent ruins of their home is even more shocking.

Bertie and May is an autobiography/biography started by Bertha Stemm Norton and finished by her daughter (Andre)  It is tale of Bertha (Bertie) and her older sister May and their life in rural Ohio during 1880 when Bertha was Eight and May was ten. It only covers several months. It reads a bit like the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. A charming peek at a gentler time and place.

Zero Stone series

The Zero Stone:  In search of the truth about a mysterious ring stone with phenomenal powers, gem trader Murdoc suddenly finds himself hunted through space by an unscrupulous religious order.

Uncharted Stars:  In this sequel, Jern continues the search for the source of the mysterious gem. With the felinoid mutant Eet, he spaces from Lorgal, a planet of sand, rock and roasting sun, to Sorois, refuge for the scum of galactic civilization. The quest ends at Waystar, asteroid stronghold of the Thieves' Guild. The Guild holds a map, a star map which will lead to the treasure of a long-dead civilization . . .

 Dipple/Janus/Forerunner series

Storm Over Warlock: The Throg task force struck the Terran survey camp a few minutes after dawn, without warning, and with a deadly precision which argued that the aliens had fully reconnoitered and prepared that attack. Eye-searing lances of energy lashed back and forth across the base with methodical accuracy. And a single cowering witness, flattened on a ledge in the heights above, knew that when the last of those yellow-red bolts fell, nothing human would be left alive down there. And so Shann Lantee, most menial of the Terrans attached to the camp on the planet Warlock, was left alone and weaponless in the strange, hostile world, the human prey of the aliens from space and the aliens on the ground alike.

Catseye: When Troy signs on as a bottom-level employee at Kossi Kyger's exotic pet shop, his sole ambition is to find a job that will keep him out of the Dipple for more than a day at a time. He soon realizes that his boss might be dealing in a more illegal market than unusual pets for Korwar's richest citizens. Even more unsettling, Troy finds himself in telepathic communication with the most exotic creatures in the shop: Terran cats, a kinkajou, and two foxes. When his boss is murdered, and one of the other employees attempts to kill the Terran animals, Troy rescues his telepathic companions and flees into Korwar's wilderness, one of the galaxy's largest hunting preserves and also home to mysterious and dangerous alien ruins.

Judgment On Janus: Naill Renfro and his mother were just two members of the flostom that had washed up in the Dipple, the vast refugee camp on Korwar that had taken in the dispossessed of the destroyed worlds, then forgotten about them. In order to buy his mother the drugs she required end her days in oblivion, if not peace, Naill sold the last thing of worth he had left; himself. He knew the planet Janus would not be a pleasant world, else there would have been no need for indentured labour. But both the service and the planet are living hells, right up to the time Naill found a pretty tangled in the roots of a felled forest giant. Then he found the true meaning of hell as a disease overwhelmed him, leaving the Garthmen to abandon him to a strange fate as he is transformed into a new form: green skinned Ayyar of Iftcan, a civilization that had died more years ago than either Naill or Ayyar cared to think of...

Night of Masks: concerns Nik Kolherne, who aids in a kidnapping to win a new face to replace his scarred one. He gets his new face and fights to free the kidnapped boy -- and himself -- from the Thieves Guild.

Ordeal In Otherwhere:  An illegal trading venture to the planet Warlock has resulted in a crew-woman going insane due to the mind influence of the females of the pseudo-reptilian Wyverns of Warlock. So the trader captain purchases the "labor contract" of Charis, a former education officer to a fanatic religious colony, thinking because she is female he can use her to contact the witches and induce them to trade with him. However, the Witches incite the males to overrun the trader's encampment and Charis is forced to flee to the wilderness to save her life. There, she manages to save the life of a "curl-cat" who becomes her telepathic companion; she also encounters Shann Lantee and his wolverine partners, and together they defeat the Thieve's Guild attempt at takeover of the planet.

Victory On Janus: In the vast jungles of Janus, the peopkle of Ift and Naill Renfro, former Earthman and now halfling, were in trouble: Earthmen were destroying their homeland and they had no idea why. Until Renfro discovered that people who looked like Ifts, whose minds were controlled by an unknown, unnamable foe, had set the Earthmen against them. Now Renfro and the Ifts had to battle an enemy that looked like themselves - with no way of telling the difference!

Forerunner Foray:  When a highly skilled sensitive comes into contact with a strange green stone, she finds herself trapped in the past in the identity of another person.

Forerunner:  "Kuxortal has always been," Forerunner begins. This ancient port was established in the time of antiquity and has built and rebuilt itself on the ruins of former civilizations. Kuxortal is inhabited by a lowly race of Burrowers, who tunnel and excavate beneath the city's towers and sometimes discover artifacts from the past. Simsa is a Burrower who has spent her entire life in the service of an older, crippled mentor, Ferwar, who had reputedly rescued Simsa from a trash heap when she was an infant. Simsa, with her blue-black skin and platinum hair, clearly comes from different stock than the other Burrowers, but Ferwar never revealed her origin. When scavengers attempt to loot the treasures that Ferwar had left behind, it becomes clear that Simsa must flee. Especially when they discover that the scavengers consider Simsa one of the treasures that they have come to steal...

Forerunner - The Second Venture: Sisma, the beggar whose mind held the ancient legacy of the Forerunners, had escaped her claw-and-fang life in the Burrows, with the off-planet Rangers. But the Rangers wanted her in captivity for study by historians. So Sisma and Zass, her winged hunting zorsal, escaped again, taking a stolen lifeboat to an unknown world. A desert where shapeshifting creatures lurked beneath the sand, where Zass and Sisma's hunting skills, psychic powers, and strange link to the Elder One in Sisma's mind were their only survival weapons. Then Thom, the Ranger who saved--and perhaps betrayed--Sisma, crashed on the planet. Together, they realized that a mysterious, mind-threatening and possibly monstrous power had found them... And only the Elder One could help.

The strangest thing, however, is the dollhouse version of Octagon House in the toy room., When she climbs up on the rocking horse in the room, she finds herself entering the past- and the dollhouse. In a series of adventures she learns about the people who had, at one time or another found refuge there. She also learns how to deal with the people in her new town. Witch World series

The "Witch World" series is Norton's best-known, and longest-running, series.

Estcarp Cycle

Witch World:  Simon Tregarth is a man from our Earth who is given the opportunity to enter a new world when he is faced with his likely death - he has been on the run for some time due to some poor decisions. After entering the Witch World he meets a woman who is been hunted. From that point on, Simon's life is irrevocably changed as he finds himself in the middle of a war against the Kolder, an alien race whose scientific knowledge is been used to control the people of the Witch World. All that stands against them are the Witches and Guardsman of Estcarp and the knowledge that Simon brings with him from our world. There is plenty of intrigue as different players jockey for power and Estcarp is all but surrounded by countries who are deeply suspicious of the Power that the witches of Estcarp wield.

Web of the Witch World picks up Simon and Jaelith's story approximately a year after the first book ends. Simon is now wed to Jaelith and he is a March Lorder, defending Estcarp's borders. However, not all is well and word is delivered to Simon that Loyse has being kidnapped by some unknown foe. He immediately sets off on the trail of the kidnappers and finds it leads him into Karsten, while Jaelith heads to her former witch sisters in the hopes of convincing them that she still has her powers.

Three Against the Witch World: The offspring of Simon Tregarth, half earthling, half witch-brood, realized that they alone could perceive the four directions - for everyone else, there was no East!  It was a blank in the mind, a blank in legend and history. And when new menaces threatened, the Tregarths realized that in that mental barrier there lay the key to all their world... somewhere to the unknown eastward must lie the sorcery that had secretly molded their destinies!

Warlock of the Witch World:  focuses on the second son of the trio – Kemoc, the titular “warlock.” The Valley of Green Silences, chief citadel of the Light, is besieged and its people are looking for allies. One of these potential friends is Dinzil of the Heights but Kemoc senses something foul underlying the man’s handsome and ostensibly friendly exterior. Unfortunately, no one else feels similarly and Kemoc has no supporting evidence. Dinzil seduces Kemoc’s sister, Kaththea, and lures her to his seat of power in the mountains. The book is the story of Kemoc’s efforts to rescue his sister and expose Dinzil’s malevolence.

Sorceress of the Witch World: Kaththea the Sorceress called forth a power such as no longer existed on the distant planet known as the Witch World. It was a power so great that it could destroy all that she loved best - and might even prove to be a greater evil than the shadow itself. Yet there could be no other choice for Kaththea than to call on Hilarion in the death-naming. For she was a witch deprived of power and she needed a guide to regain her lost skills and her lost world. There was only this ancient one, the opener of gates, with force mighty enough.

Trey of Swords: The past and the future merge as the lost battle of Witch World is fought again - but this time, it must be won! For as ancient heroes walk again by day, so do ancient evils - and it is up to Yonan the weakling, and Crytha, the untrained witch-girl, to halt the Forces of Darkness by the power of the sword of ice, the sword of shadow... and one sword more.

Ware Hawk: Tirtha was the last of the line of Hawkholme. Men who hated those of the Old Race had destroyed her clan, and she alone lived to carry the burden of her family's destiny. Driven by powerful magic to return to her ancestral home, she set out into the twisted, ruined mountains of Eastcarp. Her hired guide was a Falconer, a man of an ancient warrior race who was also alone in the world, and falconless. But a Dark One was determined to foil their mission -- and only together could they hope to stand against its awesome powers.

Gate of the Cat: American Kelsie McBlair falls through a gate in an ancient stone ring in the Scottish Highlands while rescuing a wounded wild cat. She and the cat and newborn kittens are besieged on the other side of the Gate by a Dark Rider and a pack of skeletal hounds. When a dying Witch bequeaths her true name and her jewel of power, Kelsie finds herself compelled to take up her sorcerous mission into the heart of Escore, the Green Valley, where magic lies in "trembling balance between the forces of Light and those of the Dark."

Ciara's Song: In Karsten, Ciara of Elmsgarth is only a small girl when the edict is carried out to kill all with Witch blood, and take all they own. As a mob murderers her family, Ciara is rescued and protected by the powerful Lord Tarnoor and his son, Trovagh. As the years pass, Ciara and Trovagh grow to love each other and marry, raising children of their own. Then an evil sorcerer rises to power, and his vendetta against Ciara threatens all she loves.(with Lyn McConchie)

The Duke's Ballad: Born into a family with magical powers, Aisling is a young witch who fights to protect her homeland of Kars. Unfortunately, the biggest threat to Kars is her older brother, Kirion, who has chosen to use his powers for evil, and years ago forced Aisling into exile. Since Aisling’s departure, Kirion has tightened his hold on Shastro, the Duke of Kars. Through Shastro, Kirion’s dark influence works to subjugate the entire realm. With her younger brother Keelan helping her, Aisling returns, in disguise, to undermine Kirion’s power and defeat the evil duke. But as Aisling gets closer to Shastro, the Duke takes a liking to her, and she finds herself questioning her mission. But when a neighboring clan lays siege to Kars, Aisling and Keelan realize they must act, lest Kirion bring even more death and suffering to Kars’ loyal subjects than he has already caused. Using all the magic, persistence and ingenuity she can summon, Aisling must somehow find a way to avoid the attention of her dangerous older brother, save the people from his murderous sorcery, and return to their Dukedom the peace and prosperity it once knew.

Silver May Tarnish: The Dales of Andre Norton’s Witch World have endured wars, natural disasters, the predations of strange creatures, and treachery. None loves the land as well as Lorcan, orphaned at birth, who has sought his birthright for as long as he can remember. Exiled from his native land when it was invaded by Alizon, he spent his youth in Paltendale where he was treated as an outsider, especially by Hogeth, an heir of that dale, who resented Lorcan’s presence when both were still young men. When he came of age, Lorcan left to seek his own destiny. Since then, he has fought valiantly to rid the Dales of the Alizon invaders, but not even his efforts can prevent the deaths of many people, and the destruction of many keeps and garths. The war now over, he has survived, but so have those who would plunder the lands of the survivors. And among the plundering bandits is his nemesis from Paltendale, now more bitter and determined to vanquish Lorcan. During his travels Lorcan has joined with five blank shields, who, fighting together for common cause, become his boon companions. Then he meets a young noble lass, from a dale known as Honeycoombe for its beekeeping. Her dale has been decimated by the war, but with Lorcan and his band, she will try to rebuild a home where they all can live in peace. Lorcan feels that he might at last find happiness with the valiant fair maiden. But Hogeth now leads marauders across the dales, destroying what they cannot rightfully have, and there will be no peace in the dales until Lorcan and Hogeth settle their old, bitter score.(with Lyn McConcie)
